King Lear Blog numero dos

so after reading Act 4, i sort of forgot that it was a tragedy. I mean Lear is with Cordelia, Gloucester is with Edgar, Oswald and Cornwall are dead, everything's wrapping up pretty nicely. I kind of want to stop reading now so that I don't have to watch everyone die! I hate tragedies and now that everyone is in a safe place its just going to make their death even more hard to bear. Lear in this act sort of annoyed me. I mean i get that his whole family kind of threw him out but it was his own fault and now he's crazy. If I was Cordelia, I would have made him beg for forgiveness and then let him live with me. He created all his own problems and now he has to live with the consequences. I really feel horrible for Gloucester, his eyes are gone! Poor old guy! and his son is right there but he doesn't know it! I don't know why Edgar doesn't reveal himself yet. I'm glad someone finally killed that stupid Oswald. Every time I think of him i imagive that stupid Octapus on Nick Jr. that i was forced to watch as a kid because everyone else loved it. It was a stupid show. But yea, oswalds dead which i like cuz he was a wimp and followed the commands of the devil. Overall i liked this act, it was nice to see everyone have a little bit of happiness before they all die.

King Lear Blog 1

okay, after reading scene 7, all i can say is EEEEWWW! that was totally nasty! i cant believe Cornwall really took out Gloucester's eyeballs and stepped on them! that poor old man! he was just trying to help and look where it got him! well atleast the servants were nice enough to bandage him up before he left. As for Lear, omg i feel so bad for the poor guy, but i gotta say he is ALOT funnier now. Its hilarious how he put Regan and Goneril on a mock trial and Edgar was the judge! but the poor guy is seriously going CRAZY! I kinda sorta wish that Edgar had revealed himself to his father but he didnt. I hope that Gloucester lives long enough to realize that old Tom is really his son and maybe Edgar will take care of him before he dies. Sadly though, this is a tragedy and i doubt itll happen. As for Regan and Goneril, i hope they die and rot in the deepest pit of hell. I really wanna know where Cordelia is during all of this? I thought Kent said that she had written him and said that she had a plan but so far nothing. I really liked her and the french guy. I really like Kent too..he's sticking by the king and being a motherly figure to him by telling him to lie down and to get out of the rain and stuff...hmmmmm maybe he does have homosexual feelings toward lear...hmm Luke and Anna, i think you guys must have been on to something! haha! so i wasnt sure if we're suppose to include a quote in here so im gonna do it anyway, the third servant said this at the end of scene 7, "If she live long,/ And in the end meet the old course of death,/ Women will all turn monsters." The translated version of this is, "If she lives a long and happy life, then all women may as well turn into monsters."
I love that line cuz its soo true! like if goneril seriously does not get her punishment for being so cruel then im sooooo gonna go turn into a bad girl myself! Shes done all this horrid stuff to not only her father but to others too and so far she hasnt been punished at all. Come on Shakespeare, dont fail me now!

Cry, the Beloved Coutry Part 2

Let me just start off by saying this, WHOOOOOOOPPPPIE!!!!!!! IMM DDOOOOOOOONNNNNNEEEE!! YYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!

ok now to the book...so I gotta say, it was atleast better than Pride and Prejudice.. actually way better. I dont know if I liked any of the characters except Kumalo and Msimangu. Those two just seemed kinda immune to all the stupidness that that city inflicted on everybody else. There was one quote that really spoke to me in this book, it was while Kumalo is on the mountaintop thinking about something Msimangu said, "I have one great fear in my heart, that one day when they turn to loving they will find we are turned to hating." can i just say that that quote is SO TRUE!!! throughout the whole book alot of the problems would have just been solved if everyone would get along but the white people are to stupid to let that happen! when they realize what theyre doing is wrong it is gonna be too late and the blacks will attack the whites! anyway the book ended quite nicely...i kinda wish that Gertrude wouldnt have left and that the son didnt die but it all worked out. I also loved the fact that they hired someone to help them refertilize the land...

Cry, the Beloved Coutry Part 1

So I haven't gotten to far into this book but its not totally horrible. Its really descriptive in the beginning about the African land but it hasn't put me to sleep yet. From what i've gathered, its kinda alot like Nectar in a Sieve except that Cry, the Beloved Country is about Africa instead of India. It is really evident that Africa is changing when John Kumalo says, "There is a new thing growing here. Stronger than any church or chief. You will see it one day,". He is talking about the city of Johannesburg and how it is becoming less traditional and more modern. I feel like this book and Nectar in a Sieve are going to be very similar.

Nectar in a Sieve part 2

Wow this book was actually really good. It was sad at times but I liked it. It was basically a story about a girl who got married, had kids, went through a lot of hardships and then ended up living through it all. Something I loved about this book was that when no one else would take the old couple in, a poor nine year old boy did. It just goes to show that there are kind people in the world. Something that was always mentioned in every chapter was money. In fact it was spoken about in the last lines, "Do not worry, we shall manage". This is what Selvam said to his mother after she just came home with her newly adopted son.

Nectar in a Sieve part 1

So I'm actually enjoying this book so far. I'm probably about half way through and just from reading summaries about it, I thought it was going to be a sad book but its more interesting than sad. It's about an Indian girl back in the day and her life as she gets married and has kids and adapts to her new life. What's really cool is that I'm Indian. What's even cooler is that a lot of the things she does and thinks in the book I totally understand because while we might be living in America, my parents still act like they're in the village. We seriously always have dahl in the house (in fact i just had some for dinner), my mom doesnt call my dad by his name, and my parents had an arranged marriage. Even though this book is during the olden days a lot of the customs and traditions dont really change. I could go on forever about this but i my laptop's about to die so im gonna hurry this up. So something that the author said just kinda made me realize how real this book was gonna be and it was this, "It was my husband who woke me--my husband, whom I will call here Nathan, for that was his name, although in all the years of our marriage I never called him that, for it is not meet for a woman to address her husband except as "husband""
when i read that it just kinda hit me that this book was gonna be real. My own mother never calls my dad by his name...if she did, itd just be weird.

Pride and Prejudice 2

HALLELUJAH! I'm done! So I'm not sure why soo many people love this book. It was painfully slow and just plain boring, but i have to say I'm proud of myself for sticking through it and finishing it. Everyone and everything had a happy ending but I wouldn't of minded if someone died or something either. It was just soo boring! Hopefully the movie's better. The one thing I did somewhat enjoy about this book was what Mr. Darcy did for Elizabeth. Now that is love. It was sweet but it could've been condensed to like three pages. I loved how he wrote her a letter explaining everything and then when they met again at Longbourn he said, "did it soon make you think better of me? Did you, on reading it, give any credit to its contents?" That was probably my favorite part of the book because after that the book started coming to an end. Oh, and because Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy confessed their love for each other and became engaged.

Pride and Prejudice 1

So I got this book way back in June and I must say I'm having the hardest of times getting through it. At first I simply was not use to the writing but I got over that easily now its just the plot basically. Its moving very slowly and I can't say that i enjoy that very much. I'm on volume 2 (there are 3 volumes in this book) and i feel like i just started the book. The main reason i chose this book was because it was a romance and I love romances but I don't see the romance yet. I mean there is a relationship between Jane and Mr. Bingley but they aren't mentioned very much in the book. It's mostly about Elizabeth. She's turned down a marriage proposal from a Mr. Collins, she hates Mr. Darcy, and she has her eye on Mr.Wickham, but he is barely in the book. So I don't really see where this is going. The first line in this book, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife," has really stuck with me and throughout the book. It's obvious that Mrs. Bennet believes this since she will do ANYTHING to see that Jane is with Mr. Bingley. Mrs. Bennet also tried to force Elizabeth to marry Mr. Collins since he will be inheriting their home one day. One character I really like in the book is Mr. Bennet. He's a funny guy and loves to mess around with his wife. I wish he was in it just a tad more. Well hopefully Pride and Prejudice will pick up some speed in the second volume.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf post 2

So i finished this book earlier in the day and overall i would say i enjoyed it.

it wasn't like any other classic I've read before and it definitely kept me interested with the way that Martha and George kept trying to one up the other. In my opinion it was actually quite ridiculous at what they would make up and do just to humiliate the other but in the end I feel like they were telling each other that they did care for each other, even if it was very awkward-like. After i read this i HAD to spark-note it because i didn't really feel like i got the message behind the book and after reading that i realized there were quite a few things going on behind the words. For instance the book took place in the late 50's/early 60's and it really showed since both Martha and Honey were expected to do certain things. Honey was expected to marry after becoming pregnant and after that pregnancy failed she was expected by her husband to keep trying. Martha was expected to marry someone who could one day take over her father's position as the owner (not sure if that's the right word) of the college. Well I'm trying not to give away too much in the blog so if any of you are on the fence about reading this, GO FOR IT! It was a quick but very interesting read.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf post 1

So all i can say is like wow! There has got to be some missing piece of information or something to explain why Martha and George are still married to each other. At the beginning of this play i just thought all their bickering was just simple marital banter that was there just to make the story interesting and funny (which it totally is) but oh NO nononononoooo! it just kept on getting worse and worse. Here's a part that i just found hilarious:

George: All right, love...whatever love wants. Isn't it nice the way some people have manners, though, even in this day and age? Isn't it nice that some people won't just come breaking into other poeple's houses even if they do hear some sub-human monster yowling at 'em from inside...?

Martha: SREW YOU!

After i read this i knew i was gonna enjoy this book. So anyway so far I've read part 1 and 2 and all that's happened is martha invited a couple over at 2 AM in the morning and basically Martha and George pretty much go at it with each other. They insult each other to no end and at the end of part 2 Martha even does IT (i think u know what i mean when i say IT) with the male guest, who is actually there with his wife, to get back at George. Through all this though all I'm really thinking is why is the couple even there at 2 AM in the morning anyway? and WHY don't they leave already!?? i mean they can obviously see that they've walked into a war zone so why not just LEAVE? such a weird play but i gotta say its pretty interesting...

oh and i should probably mention that Martha keeps saying such bad things about her husband George who keeps telling her not to but she just doesn't listen! First she goes and talks about their son, which i think George thinks isn't his son, and then she goes and embarrasses him because he isn't the head of the history department yet ( George is a history professor at martha's dad's college). All i can say is poor George and that there is a certain word that describes people like Martha, but i don't say or type bad words so I'm going to let you all imagine it.
